Last Words

Before we wave goodbye, on behalf of George Town Celebrations 2012, GTWHI, PHT, PGT, George Town Festival & Living Museum, we would like to thank everyone for their participation and involvement for making this year celebration a complete success.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to all the performers, the community, the volunteers, the uniform personnel, the St John Ambulance, the patrolling Police personnel, the private house owners, the Living Museum traders, the media partners and all Associations involved including the Municipals Office and Chief Ministers Office, who has contributed in realizing this 4th George Town Celebrations.

Last but not least, we would also like to thank everyone who has their hands on directly or indirectly in the making of Live Heritage 2012. You’re most welcomed to share with us your memorable moments by posting to us your photos, your thoughts, your comments at our facebook page. Till we meet again next year, Live Heritage!

Tomorrow, George Town Open House still have another day to go, Nasi Kandar Festival is still on until 11pm tomorrow night so does Living Museum. Tonight Is The Night

Flags off tonight at Town Hall, Jalan Padang Kota Lama is at 7.30pm. Last minute registration shall not be entertained but cyclist are welcome to bring their bicycles with their family and friends to join the ride. Its a community celebrations after all.

Chinese Opera Workshop

On Sunday, 8th July 2012 from 10.00am until 12.30pm, Teochew Association at Chulia Street will hold a Chinese Opera Workshop. Admission for the workshop is free-of-charge but pre-registration is required. Call our hotline 011 − 1283 3846 now; as seats are limited.

The workshop is meant to develop participants’ skill in the unique way of integrating music and movements in the Chinese opera style. The workshop will also expand participants’ creative potential, talent, imaginative power and creativity. In the workshop, they will choose a role to enact in an experimental piece, and will experience how different roles require different movements and hand gestures. This process itself, will help to develop their own roles in future. Live Heritage!

Acheh Street Cultural Festival

July 7 − July 8, 2012 from 9am until 10pm at Acheh Street, Lebuh Acheh Mosque and the Islamic Museum there will be loads of activities going on. At Islamic Museum alone, there’s Sun, Star and Moon Gazing with Telescopes and Live Projection, Islamic Calligraphy, Malay Wood Carving while dozens of stalls and tents will be set up at Lebuh Acheh Mosques and along Acheh Street that caters Peranakan Food of Malay and Arab, Batik, Silat Cekak Demonstrations, Street performances, malay music, talks, arts and exhibitions of Islamic Art & Science, and so much more. Happening live this George Town Celebrations. Live Heritage!

Road Blocks!

George Town Celebrations as we all already know, like previous year, will be jammed packed with people from all walks of life as dozens of activities, street performances, exhibitions, screenings, food fiesta happening all at the same period of time. So the last thing we might ever need is; your car to be in the middle of it.

Therefore, here’s is the location map to ensure you know where to go to, a list of road block time schedule, also in Bahasa MalaysiaIf you are planning to drive, do know your route and re-route to avoid traffic congestion and do follow the instructions given by our traffic personnel and RELA task force agents and ensure your safely at all time. Public transportation are highly recommended, The Central Area Transit city shuttle bus in George Town will ply the enclave as usual to offer free rides but there will be some minor changes in the route due to the road closures.

Living Museum: Community Street Exhibition “乔治市活宝”系列:社区老照片展

On 6th, 7th & 8th July 2012, from 10am until 5pm Living Museum will be holding a Community Street Exhibition displaying 12 Old Photographs as well as 12 Old Stories taking you to a trip down memory lane with these friendly locals and have a nice friendly chat with them in their five-foot-way about the good ol’ days.

Besides the display of the old photographs at the doorsteps of local residents on Armenian Street, Acheen Street and Cannon Street Enclave, Living Museum will also extend its appreciation by the involvements of Eric Loh for the walkabout session. To participate or more information and registration on the walkabout, please call our hotline 011- 1283 3846.

The tour is devided to two groups namely Group 1 for English Tour on July 7, 2012 (Sat) at 11.00am and Group 2 for Mandarin Tour on July 8, 2012 (Sun) at 5.30pm.

Hokkien Opera “The Painted Skin – A Ghost Story”

This performance is brought to you by the Jade Opera Troupe and Arts & Acts from Singapore exclusively for George Town Celebrations and its happening at Khoo Kongsi from 8.45pm – 9.30pm this July 7, 2012. Here’s a sneak peak.

“The Painted Skin – A Ghost Story” is the Qing dynasty precursor to the horror stories of today.  The tale of Wang Sheng who meets and takes in a mysterious young lady, Yan Xiao Yu, upon learning of her abuse at the hands of her own family. A Taoist priest warns him of demonic danger, but does Wang heed his words? Who is the lady in the painted skin?

Dragon Dance Parade is kicking off from Cheah Kongsi, Armenian Street, Cannon Street, Acheen Street, Cheah Kongsi and back to Armenian Street.

Streets Alive! George Town Heboh “闹热乔治市街头”

This July 7, 2012 at Lebuh Acheh from 7pm – 7.30pm, Ombak Muda children perform the history of Lebuh Acheh, Armenian and Cannon in a musical-dance-theatre. Created by the young people themselves, the 20 minute performance will feature singing, rap, gamelan pieces, as well as music using everyday objects and movements. Based on research and interviews with residents, the music, texts and movements are based on the activities and legends of the people living in the 3 streets. There was constant hustle and bustle with pilgrims going toMecca, White and Red flag activities, clanging from recycle shops, chingay competitions between gangs, 5 kopitiam where the young and old could eat and socialize day and night. Young people could play games in the streets and at the Youth Centre. Yes, the streets were alive!  What has become of these streets today?  The children will enlighten us!

Ombak Ombak ARTStudio is a non-formal collective of multiethnic artists and producers who mount contemporary performances, exhibitions and festivals which project Malaysian identity and creativity.  Ombak is committed to nurturing and promoting the arts through performances, festivals, exhibitions and training workshops. It promotes arts education and community theatre through its young people’s programs known as Ombak Muda. Past performances include  Ronggeng Merdeka, Ko-Tai Penang, Opera Pasar, Ceritera Botanik, River Meets Light.

Dragon Dance at Cheah Kongsi

Dragons are believed to bring good luck to people, which is reflected in their qualities that include great power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and auspiciousness. Dragon Dance is well known as a form of traditional dance and performance synonym to the Chinese culture. During George Town Celebrations this July 7, 2012 at 7.00pm – 7.30pm and a repeated show around 8.15pm – 8.30pm both at Cheah Kongsi.

Boria Asli & Ghazal Parti “Boria 歌舞与Ghazal 诗歌”

Boria Asli by Norizeight Ventures will be performing from 9.00pm until 10.00pm on July 7, 2012. Here’s a video clip from an event to celebrate the George Town & Malacca World Heritage inscription in 2008. So come join us and dance along to this year’s boria performance this July.

“Rojak Penang” Cinema on the Street

“Rojak Penang” Cinema on the Street short film screening is a series of intimate little film portraits by Tan Yeow Wooi that highlight the diversity and cross-cultural exchanges that take place on a daily basis in Penang. This particular event is happening at Lebuh Ah Quee from 8.00pm to 8.35pm and 9.30pm to 10.00pm on July 6, 2012. There will also be a Q&A session right around 8.45pm until 9.20pm.

Heritage Heboh, Children’s Festival: Activities

Heritage Heboh Children’s Festival initiate by ARTS-ED is happening at 10.00am until 6.00pm on July 7, 2012 at Lumut Lane & Youth Centre Basketball Court. This mini festival for young people have lots in store specifically for George Town Celebrations.

On the day itself, children’s are celebrated while they learn and participate on creative exhibitions, knowing how to print their own t-shirts and even make their own toys. Other activities like Heritage Treasure Hunt, handicrafts and cooking lessons are available too but pre-registration need to be made on first come, first serve basis this July 7th, 2012 at 10am.

Living Museum: Schedule “乔治市活宝”系列:分享老故事(中英)

While more and more people are booking themselves a spot for this years itinerary, lets us guide you on the schedule itself. This year, we are pleased to inform that all together we have 6 traders joining us for Living Museum.

We kick off things on Friday the 6th with a morning visit (haircuts not included!) to Vincent Hairdressing Saloon and in the afternoon, head down to Chulia Street to learn about the traditional textile trade from the well known merchant, Fazal Mohammed Bros.

Saturday July 7th is a full day with FOUR places to visit. If you missed it on Friday, you have a second chance to visit Fazal Mohammad Bros., followed by Hock Lean Seng, the coffin shop!  In the afternoon head over to the Hong Kong Shoe Shop and Ah Ban Paper Oblation, maker of prayer effigies.  Sunday the 8th, visit the old ODEON cinema to see how the 35mm films are projected on the big screen.

Seats are limited and we’re are serious, as all visits are only catered for appox. 15 pax per visit and that’s it.
